Luas Line BXD

In November 2005, the Government launched Transport 21 a multi-billion euro investment strategy for transport in Ireland, geared to deliver a world-class transport system which includes seven new Luas Lines and two new Metro Lines.

The proposed Luas City Centre (Line BX) and Luas Broombridge (Line D) lines are an integral part of the Transport 21 Strategy.

Luas City Centre (Line BX) will extend the Luas Green Line from St Stephen’s Green to O’Connell Street and provide an interchange opportunity with the Luas Red Line at Abbey Street, thereby providing an essential missing link, a link critical to the establishment of a Luas network.

Phase 3 - Line and Stop Design

Luas Broombridge (Luas D) will extend the Luas City Centre (Line BX) line from O’Connell Street to Broombridge via Broadstone and Grangegorman. At Broombridge the Luas Line will interchange with Iarnrod Éireann’s Maynooth railway line services.

In December 2008 the Railway Procurement Agency merged the proposed Luas City Centre (Line BX) project and the  Luas Broombridge (Line D) project into a single project. The overall proposed line between St Stephen’s Green and Broombridge is now referred to as Luas City/Broombridge (Line BXD).

The Railway Procurement Agency (RPA), applied to An Bord Pleanála on 22nd June 2010, for a Railway Order for Luas Broombridge (St. Stephen’s Green to Broombridge) which, if granted, would permit RPA to construct, operate and maintain a light railway line between St. Stephen’s Green and Broombridge.

Luas City/Broombridge (Line BXD) is part of the Government's Transport 21 investment programme.
